Doctors suspect that the Reds boss has a virus, meaning any contact with the players could result in passing the illness on. Assistant manager Colin Pascoe will partner with coach Mike Marsh as they deputze for Rodgers. It is not yet known whether Rodgers will be well enough to return for Wednesday's home fixture against Sunderland.
In addition to Rodgers, Glen Driscoll, Liverpool's head of performance, and back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones have also been sent home by the medical team after being assessed by the club doctor Zaf Iqbal.
"It was impossible for Brendan, Glen and Brad to attend the game," Iqbal said. "They are not fit to be at the match, and any contact with the rest if the squad could cause the bug to spread to more of the playing staff."
