"Beast" Bale recovers to score in Spurs friendly

Gareth Bale wasn't fit enough for the Olympics but looked sharp in a preseason friendly against the LA Galaxy in the Home Depot Center.
CARSON, Calif. – A back injury ruled Gareth Bale out of the Olympics, but even before the Games have begun the Welsh winger is back playing.

The 23-year-old completed 75 minutes against the LA Galaxy, scoring the opening goal with a header off a Gylfi Sigurdsson cross.

"Gareth is of course extremely young and physically a beast," coach Andre Villas-Boas explained. "He was able to put on the effort. We extended that because we want him to complete a certain amount of minutes before we start the season.

"We could say that [we] took a risk. If you recall that 10 minutes into the game he was stretching himself, so he was feeling a little bit of muscle tightness but it was controllable."

Was Villas-Boas surprised Bale returned so quickly despite pulling out of the Olympics?

"We welcome his recovery," AVB said, brushing aside the question. "To have a player of this dimension is fantastic."
