Manchester United winger Young could become a target, warns Ferguson

The Red Devils’ boss is concerned that his summer signing from Aston Villa could become the object of media criticism in the wake of his penalty box theatrics in recent weeks.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Ashley Young is in danger of being labelled and targeted as a ‘diver’.

Controversy has surrounded Young in recent weeks after he appeared to make the most of apparently minimal contact from Shaun Derry, who was sent off in the 2-0 victory over QPR, and then Ciaran Clark, in the 4-0 defeat of Aston Villa, in both cases winning important penalties for his title-chasing side.

“Ashley is in danger of being targeted as a diver. It doesn’t take much for press to get the bandwagon rolling and it’s unfair,” wrote Sir Alex in his program notes ahead of United's clash with Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Although defending the England international whom he signed from Aston Villa last summer, the United boss did admit that Young had made the most of the challenges.

“I concede he tends to be a little dramatic, but at the end of the day he is being fouled."
