Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has warned his Manchester City counterpart Roberto Mancini that the Eastlands club could take "years" to win the Premier League.

The Black Cats host the Skeikh Mansour's club at the Stadium of Light on Sunday looking for their first league victory, while City have made a very positive start to their campaign. The Eastlands club began with a goalless draw with Tottenham on the opening day of the season, and followed it up with three consecutive victories in all competitions - including a 3-0 victory over Liverpool.

But the former Wigan Athletic manager insists that the Italian may not be given adequate time to build a squad that will win the title, as he believes that the lofty expectations coupled with the trigger-friendly nature of the upper echelon of the club could prove to be a stumbling block.

"Mancini will need years [to win the Premier League]," he said, according to The Mirror. "I don’t think you can do it in just one or two years.

"You have to be instant and hit the ground running, otherwise you’re in trouble.

"Mancini will need to win things, finish in the top four and be in the Champions League. Anything less is failure. They spent all that money and, don’t forget, they’re not there [in the Champions League] yet because they finished fifth. You can’t buy it, but money gives you a chance."

However, Bruce believes that the former Inter boss is good enough to overcome the trials and tribulations that come with managing a club that has spent as much as City have this summer.

Bruce added: "Certainly [former City boss] Mark Hughes would say he wasn’t given enough time.

"But, then again, was he their man? I think the difference is that Mancini is their man."

Manchester City have spent over £100 million during the current transfer window.
