Liverpool Legend Ian St John: Javier Mascherano Is 'A Little Dog'
Former Anfield hero takes a dig at Barcelona's latest acquisition.
By Adithya Ananth
Former Liverpool striker Ian St John has ripped into the remains of Javier Mascherano's reputation on Merseyside, believing that he will not be missed at Anfield.
The Argentine joined the Reds in 2007 following a rocky period at West Ham United that was fraught with off-field issues.
But the tough tackling midfielder became a mainstay in the midfield following his switch, with former boss Rafael Benitez once referring to him as a "monster of a player".
However, the 26-year-old recently left the club under controversial circumstances, following Goal.com UK revealing that a £17.2 million fee had been agreed between the two clubs.
Mascherano sat out the Reds' ill-fated 3-0 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League, which was followed by the Europa League victory over Trabzonspor.
Now St John has taken a dig at the midfielder's style of play, as he is quoted by The Mirror as saying: "Mascherano has never been my favorite player. He always had a scowl on his face.
"I didn’t enjoy watching him. He was a little dog, getting in there, biting and winning tackles, not the pleasant side of the game."
Liverpool have wasted little time in bringing in a replacement for Mascherano, as they have signed Raul Meireles from Porto.
