Rafael Benitez Criticizes Liverpool’s Below-Par Performance Against Wigan
Reds boss disappointed as his side loses ground in race for fourth place.
By Steve Alexander
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez delivered a brutally honest assessment of his side's performance after seeing them lose 1-0 against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
Hugo Rodallega's eighth Premier League goal of the season 10 minutes before half-time ended a run of seven league matches without a victory for the Latics, and dented the Reds' top-four hopes.
Benitez was understandingly disappointed after seeing his side lose ground in the race to finish in fourth place.
Asked if he thought it was a fair result, Benitez told ESPN: "I think so.
"I think we didn't play well, especially in the first half. We didn't show attitude."
The Spaniard admitted that his side gave the ball away too often and they have to improve if they are to finish in the lucrative fourth Champions League spot.
He said: "That is very clear, especially in the first half."
"We're not happy. We have to show more character if we want to be in top four."
