Premier League Player Ratings: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Liverpool
Rodallega piles more misery on Reds.
WIGAN ATHLETIC
Chris Kirkland - 6 - Not a lot to do, as all of Torres' efforts were off target.
Emmerson Boyce - 8 - Created Rodallega's goal with a well-arched cross and caused problems going forward.
Gary Caldwell - 8 - Got the better of Torres early on, setting the tone for the game, as he dominated the Spaniard.
Titus Bramble - 7.5 - Booked for a rash lunge at Torres, but was pretty solid throughout and made few errors.
Maynor Figueroa - 7.5 - Long throws caused problems for Liverpool. Caused a few problems for himself defensively, but showed pace and athleticism to deal with them.
Charles N'Zogbia - 8.5 - Terrorised Insua down the right, and was able to go both left and right as he ran at the Argentine. Always dangerous, he nearly grabbed a second goal in the second half, but was denied by Reina's legs.
Mohamed Diame - 7.5 - Some nice sweeping passes, and unsettled Gerrard with his work-rate. Replaced late on after a fine night's work.
Paul Scharner - 7 - Perhaps should have grabbed a second goal late on, but played his part as Wigan won most of the battles in midfield.
James McCarthy - 8 - Bit into tackles with youthful energy, and got forward when possible. Was still going strong in the 90th minute, and looks a real prospect for the Latics.
Hugo Rodallega - 8 - Took the opening goal well at the far post, and caused plenty of problems for Carragher and co with his energy and close control.
Marcelo Moreno - 6.5 - Pitch, coupled with Liverpool's casual defending, meant lost causes were always worth chasing. Not especially threatening though, and was replaced by Moses.
Substitutes
Hendry Thomas - N/A - Late replacement for Diame.
Jason Scotland - N/A - Replaced Rodallega late on.
Victor Moses - 6 - Slashed at a late chance after replacing Moreno.
LIVERPOOL
Pepe Reina - 6 - Helplessly exposed for Rodallega's goal, he later denied N'Zogbia a second, but deserves better than the performances being served up in front of him.
Javier Mascherano - 5.5 - Diligent in his defensive work, and got some good balls into the box when he got forward from right-back. Less effective in midfield strangely, where he resorted to niggly fouls and poor passes.
Jamie Carragher - 4 - Mopped up a few times early on but was, like the rest of his side, off the pace in the first half and did not improve after the break.
Sotiris Kyrgiakos - 4 - Booked for an untidy challenge on Scharner, he ended the game as a target man, indicative of the untidy performance Liverpool produced.
Emiliano Insúa - 4 - Booked early on, and was troubled by N'Zogbia throughout the first half, meaning he could not get forward at all. Delivered a couple of decent crosses late on, but was shoddy in his tackling.
Lucas - 4 - Some nice passes were spoiled by some awful ones, and he collected a booking - harshly - for a clip on Bramble. Replaced early in the second half by Johnson.
Steven Gerrard - 4 - Passing was woeful in the first half, and he was unable to convert a half-chance from Benayoun's cross. Never got into the game in the second half and wasted possession far too much, booked after a frustration-fuelled lunge at McCarthy, who won the individual battle all night.
Dirk Kuyt - 4 - One nice touch for Benayoun in the first half, but was as guilty as anyone of conceding possession, including an atrocious pass which resulted in Wigan's goal. Things did not improve in the second half for the Dutchman, though one towering back post header almost allowed Torres to net.
Yossi Benayoun - 5 - Created Liverpool's best moments in the first half, but showed a reluctance to shoot which cost his side. Withdrawn for Aquilani.
Maxi Rodríguez - 4 - Never got into the game, he may as well have stayed at home, such was his anonymity.
Fernando Torres - 4 - Hit the post early on with a sliced volley, and grew in frustration at the awful service provided to him. Booked for a foul on a rampaging Boyce, he missed a couple of other chances after the break on a frustrating night.
Substitutes
Glen Johnson - 4 - Given most of the second half, but looked out of sorts and off the pace.
Alberto Aquilani - 6 - Liverpool's best player - which sums it all up for Rafa Benitez. The only man who can look at his passing game and not feel embarrassed.
Ryan Babel - N/A - Late sub, given just eight minutes which was not enough.
