Manchester City Launch Bid For Estudiantes' Juan Sebastian Veron

The Argentinian midfield wizard looks to have garnered the Citizens' interest despite being 34 years old.

Manchester City have offered Estudiantes de La Plata £7 million (50 million pesos) for the services of Argentine midfield wizard, Juan Sebastian Veron, according to Argentina sports daily Hoy de La Plata.

The bid reportedly comes at the behest of Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who played with Veron at both Sampdoria and Lazio, where the two won an Italian league title, an Italian cup, and the European Supercup. Mancini later served as Veron's coach at Inter, where they won two Italian cups, two Italian Supercups, and one Serie A title together.

Although the initial reactions to the offer appear to be negative, they are not definitive and the amount offered would help the Argentine club to balance their books as they aim to solve their financial problems. Veron would receive a similar wage to the one he currently earns with Estudiantes.

The 34-year-old Veron has had a phenomenal year at Estudiantes, recently chosen as the best player in America and earning a spot in Diego Maradona's Argentina national team. On the global stage, Veron was far and away Estudiantes' best player at the Club World Cup, causing Barcelona a number of problems with his passing in the final.

Manchester City have been big players in the transfer market in the past two years, shelling out huge amounts for stars such as Robinho, Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Joleon Lescott. Also on the reported shopping list are Cristian Ansaldi and Patrick Vieira.
