Van der Sar Clean Sheet Record Ends

A blunder by the giant Dutchman awarded Newcastle with an early goal and simultaneously put an end to his goalless streak.

EPL: Edwin Van der Sar, Newcastle United v Manchester United (PA)
With just nine minutes gone at St. James' Park tonight, Edwin van der Sar's clean sheet record came to an end. It was a grim conclusion to the impressive feat, as the 'keeper was thrown off guard by an awkwardly bouncing shout from Newcastle winger Jonas Guttierez, and proceeded to spill the ball into the path of Peter Lovenkrands who was quick to capitalize on the error from six yards out.

The run ended with the 38-year-old totaling a 1,311 minute record haul, but van der Sar would not enjoy the glory of his feat until Lovenkrands completed his celebrations and the chantings of "dodgy keeper" died down from the Newcastle faithfuls. Perhaps a little harsh from the population of the Gallowgate end, but one could speculate that the Dutchman might see the funny side.

The last time van der Sar had to pick the ball out of his own net in the Premiership was on November 8, when Samir Nasri scored a double during United's clash with Arsenal. Twenty-one hours of play since then, a record has been set.
