Police have launched an investigation after Sunderland striker Darren Bent alleged that a Black Cats fan racially abused his mother during the club's 1-0 defeat against Wigan on Saturday.

Bent made the allegation on his Twitter page. The tweet read: "So we get beat by Wigan and to make matters worse my mum gets racially abused by a SUNDERLAND fan. I wont stand for that."

"Sunderland are liaising with Northumbria Police to fully investigate this matter," a Sunderland spokeswoman told BBC Sport.

"Behavior of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club."

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help the investigation.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything is asked to call GMP on 0161 872 5050.
