The Nigerian has returned to the first team this season after a lengthy absence with an Achilles injury, sustained in November 2008.
He hit 21 goals for the club in 2007-08, but Moyes thinks it could be a while before the player hits those heights again.
"Yakubu has been in and around the first team, but I find it difficult to say if he is fit or not because he has recovered from his injury - but I still think he runs with a limp," Moyes told his club's official website.
"He can come on and make an impact, and he has made an impact in some of the games in which we have started him.
"(But) I don't think he has shown the sharpness or the power which he had (before the injury).
"It was a really bad injury and it may take him six to nine months to get back to where he was," Moyes continued.
"The dilemma is, does he look back to normal? Does he look like he can complete the 90 minutes? And on a lot of occasions the answer has been 'no' to that."
