Crouch Hopes Late-Night Antics Won't Affect England Chances

The beanpole striker has promised to buckle down.

England Press Conference: Peter Crouch (PA)
Peter Crouch has admitted he was worried over how England manager Fabio Capello might react to news of his wild night in Portsmouth last month.

The lanky hitman was snapped celebrating into the early hours with his Tottenham Hotspur team-mates after their 2-1 win at Fratton Park on October 17.

Pictures of Crouch sticking his 6ft 7in frame through a taxi roof and tearing up the dance floor with Jonathan Woodgate weren't well received by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

And the former Liverpool star confessed his concern over the consequences such hijinks could have had regarding his place in the Three Lions setup.

He said in The Sun: "Harry [Redknapp] said to me 'You're an idiot, now move on.'

"Was I worried about Fabio Capello's reaction? Yes, of course. But I didn't know what he would think and he hasn't said anything to me."

While contrite over his behavior, Crouch suggested that the situation had been blown out of proportion to a degree - although he did stress that there would be no encore.

"It was eight days before the next game. I've not covered myself in glory but I haven't killed anyone, even though I feel like I have," said the 28-year-old.

"We were going out with all the lads, as a team, and it probably escalated a bit more than I would have planned.

"But if you don't have a game until the following weekend, you want to go out and relax. It can't be football, football, football.

"Yet being a World Cup year we have to concentrate on football matters. It won't happen again."
