Chelsea thrashed Blackburn Rovers to return to the top of the Premier League with Frank Lampard on superb form, bagging two goals in a 5-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues opened the scoring after 21 minutes when Nicolas Anelka's shot was diverted into his own net by Gael Givet.

Shortly after half-time Frank Lampard doubled Chelsea's lead with a trademark strike after Didier Drogba's through ball.

Michael Essien then scored with a powerful drive that swerved past Paul Robinson.

Chelsea won a penalty when Ryan Nelsen fouled Didier Drogba, which Frank Lampard converted.

Blackburn's night got worse when Didier Drogba scored to make it 5-0 after heading in a Frank Lampard corner.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech started the game poorly when he flapped at a Morten Gamst Pedersen long thrown. The error went unpunished much to the relief of Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Nicolas Anelka was sent running down the left from, before crossing towards an onrushing Didier Drogba, who pressured Gael Givet enough for him to send the ball into his own net.

Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson had a brilliant first half, with inspired saves keeping half time score at just 1-0.

Frank Lampard put Chelsea 2-0 up after Didier Drogba turned Martin Olsson, before crossing for Lampard to smash home from 10 yards.

Michael Essien scored a superb goal on 52 minutes when Michael Ballack found the Ghanian 35 yards out, who then promptly fired in a powerful shot to make it 3-0.

As Drogba ran towards goal he was tripped by Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen, which gave Frank Lampard his third goal in two games after wrong-footing Paul Robinson from the spot.

The rout was completed when Didier Drogba out-muscled Nelson and headed Lampard's corner past a flapping Robinson and, to the crowd's delight, Terry bravely cleared off the line after Olsson had lobbed Cech.

Chelsea added to their four goals in midweek with five goals which sees them go into their Carling Cup tie with Bolton in terrific form.

Blackburn now face Peterborough in the Carling Cup before a daunting trip to Manchester United next weekend.
