Player Ratings: England 2-1 Slovenia

Jermain Defoe and a penalty from Frank Lampard earned the Three Lions the win, but Ljubikankic ensured it was a nervy finish.

Green: 6.5 - Made a few notable blocks, but life was made relatively easy in the first half. Seemed unable to concentrate for the full 90, though, but perhaps not to the full extent as David James.

Johnson: 7.5 - Played a high line, mirroring Ashley Cole's work on the left flank. Criticism will be hurled his way for his erring defensive display, as it was his poor form that allowed the Slovenians a sneaky way back into the game.

Upson: 6.5 - Sloppy, at times, in possession.

Terry: 7.5 - One bullet-nodded shot rattled Handanovic's crossbar. Decent at the back.

Ashley Cole: 8.5 - Got forward well, and looked to inspire his team with his own forward motions. Was named the sponsor's Man of the Match.

Wright-Phillips: 7.0 - Some fizzing work from wide, but also skipped inside to good effect, breaking through the middle.

Lampard: 7.0 - Scored the penalty - his fourth goal in six international matches.

Barry: 7.0 - Good tracking back. Showed strong stamina. Kept things tight in the middle. Was an organizer. His rating is marred due to his apparent failure to pass positively.

Gerrard: 7.0 - Played some good passes. Attempted a shot that almost bear-hugged the net but curled just the wrong side of the post.

Rooney: 8.5 - Won the contentious penalty. Could have had a hat-trick, he even hit the post. Once again showed what an engine he has, he was just unlucky in the finish - which is anomalous to his international form: ten goals in the past eight games (now nine). Good all round display. Received a King's applause.

Heskey: 7.5 - Good hold up play, and nodded countless balls to a through-running Roo. Solid performance from a dependable non-goal-scoring forward.

Lennon: A match-changing performance, looked lively and effervescent.

Defoe: Scored, again, in an England jersey. Should be knocking on the door for a starting role.

Carlton Cole: Strong as an ox on the ball and seemed a good runner. Made an impact from just ten minutes of play.

Lescott: n/a, Carrick: n/a, Milner: n/a.

Handanovic: 6.0 - Made a few saves, but had a penchant for passing that could have got him in hot water

Brecko: 5.5 - Set-piece delivery from right-hand side was often substandard.

Suler: 5.5 - Looked out of form.

Cesar: 6.0 - Booked, and replaced early in the first half due to a collision with Rooney. Was bizarrely deemed the guilty party for the penalty.

Jokic: 7.0 - Attacked from deep and enjoyed good link-up play with Kirm.

Radosavljevic: 6.5 - Was replaced with Krhi late in the second half.

Koren: 5.5 - An underwhelming performance from the Premier League accustomed player.

Kirm: 7.0 - Had an interesting battle with Glen Johnson on the flank.

Dedic: 7.5 - Some good playmaking and passing. Was on the losing side of a battle with Upson, but had a good game. Could have scored late in the second-half. Looked like a good attacking outlet.

Birsa: 6.5 - Stabbed shot from distance rose above the framework. Well-weighted crosses from wide.

Novakovic: 6.5 - Had a great chance to break the deadlock early on but squandered his chance.

Ljubijankic: Scored a fine header to ensure a result of 2-1.

Mavric: Filled in for Cesar.

Krhin: n/a, Stevanovic: n/a, Pecnik: n/a, Komac: n/a.
