Gordon Banks: Ban Divers For A Season
The former goalkeeper thinks two games is just not enough to punish something he regards as a blight on the game.
England's legendary goalkeeper Gordon Banks feels that football's governing bodies need to be much tougher than they have been on players who dive to deceive match officials, despite the apparent outcry from Arsenal about the harshness of the two-game European ban handed to Eduardo da Silva in the wake of the penalty he 'won' against Celtic.
The World Cup winner, indeed, advocates that the footballing authorities should hand out season-long bans to players caught 'simulating', as it is something which urgently needs eradicating from the game, in his view.
"That evidence is now portrayed the following day and they see that he's not been touched or he's thrown himself for a penalty or whatever, then that man's got to be banned for the rest of the season," he asserted, speaking to Sky Sport News today.
"Not just a match or a little fine by whoever. He's got to be banned. And then the manager will say, 'Look, you guys, I don't want you doing that'."
Arsenal confirmed that they will today be lodging an appeal against the ban handed to Eduardo, a UEFA decision they regard as "deeply flawed", and not based on the full use of the video evidence available.
