Ferguson: Rooney Is Not Yet The Finished Article Yet

The Red Devils manager feels that the powerful forward still has plenty of learning to do.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has brushed off assertions that Wayne Rooney must shoulder the attacking burden this season after the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez to Manchester City.

Ferguson feels that just being himself will be enough for the versatile striker to think about, and that there is still work for him to do on his game before he can be thought of as a truly great player.

“Wayne doesn’t have to do anything else except be himself," the Scotsman told the Red Devils' official website.

"There’s a lot of improvement to come from him – he’s not the finished article. You have to recognize that with young players there’s a bit of road to go down before you see the complete player.

"I’m talking about maturity, authority and decision-making. These are things that will come with time."

United are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia, and won their opening fixture 3-2 on Saturday against a Malaysia XI.
