England has received support for its bid to host the 2018 World Cup from a somewhat unexpected source.

Speaking to Australia's Sun-Herald, German legend Franz Beckenbauer declared that the so-called 'home of football' had everything necessary to stage the showpiece event.

"As a UEFA member, I would like to see it in Europe but it is an open race," he said.

"England could host it tomorrow because they have the stadiums, the infrastructure, the fans, everything. But there are a lot of other different countries bidding.

"Let's wait and see."

The comments must be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as Beckenbauer spent the rest of the interview supporting Australia's chances as well.

Apart from those two nations, Spain, Russia and the USA are also bidding.

Beckenbauer is a member of the FIFA board that will make the final decision.
