Shearer Wants Owen Back Amongst The Goals

The new Magpies boss has been quick to disclose who he thinks is the key to Newcastle United's survival bid.

Surprise Newcastle United manager Alan Shearer has intimated that his former team-mate for both the Tyneside outfit and England - Michael Owen - will play a crucial part in the club's bid for Premier League survival.

Owen has not scored since January, when he found the net in a 2-2 draw against West Ham United played at St. James' Park, and Shearer wants the injury-prone forward to re-find his goal-scoring touch with haste.

Speaking to the club's official website, Shearer said, "All I want to see Michael do is put the ball in the back of the net. He's done that all of his life. I've spoken to him already and I've asked him if I can have a few more in the eight remaining games!"

Sir Bobby Robson played a key role in rejuvenating Shearer's form in 1999 and, when pressed as to whether his own presence could have a similar role in Owen's renaissance, the Geordie idol replied, "I'm sure people will make comparisons with that, but Michael is a different character to what I am and is a different player.

"But he's in this squad and it's his job, my job and everyone's job to make sure we're not in that bottom three come the end of the season.”

Alan Shearer is due to meet the press at 14:30 local time today.
