Ferguson On Manchester United's Foundations

Fergie reckons the strength of his rearguard has been critical to the Red Devils' revival this season.

After claiming a 1-0 win against West Ham United on Sunday, Manchester United have now gone three months without conceding a goal in the Premier League.

Such stinginess in defense has seen the Old Trafford club bolt to the top of the table after an indifferent start to the campaign, as they now hold a two-point lead - with a game in hand - over Liverpool.

After the win at Upton Park, which came courtesy of Ryan Giggs' second-half strike, Sir Alex Ferguson couldn't hide his pride at how well his back line performed.

The Scot said in The Sun, “When you have that foundation, you are always hoping one of your skillful players can win the game for you, like Cristiano Ronaldo or Dimitar Berbatov. Today it was Ryan.

“My defense was great. There was a moment when they got into our six-yard box and it looked like West Ham would get a clear shot on goal. But my players kept getting their foot in and getting the ball cleared.

“For Manchester United, over 20 hours without conceding a goal is extraordinary. Great credit to the players. I am very proud of them.”
