The chances that Jermaine Pennant will still be in Liverpool's colors come next season have dropped dramatically after Rafael Benitez admitted that "a new contract for him would be very difficult."

British tabloid The Sun claimed just this Thursday that Liverpool are ready to offer Pennant a 12-month extension to his current contract, but the 25-year-old now looks as close to the Anfield exit as he has ever been since arriving on a £6.7million from Birmingham.

Benitez said: "I have had a conversation with Jermaine. He is waiting for a good offer and we are waiting for a good offer.

"A new contract for him would be very difficult," the Reds boss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

The former Arsenal star, who has played 55 Premier League games for Liverpool since 2006,  will become a free agent in the summer, and recent reports suggest he is close to penning a pre-contract with AC Milan.
