Liverpool Sweating On Alonso Injury
The Reds are waiting anxiously for news of their Spanish pass-master's foot problem.
Xabi Alonso continued his superb run of form at the weekend as he pulled the strings in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Preston North End in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Basque midfielder only lasted until half-time, however, as he came off worse for wear after sustaining a knock which forced him to the sidelines late in the first period.
Some minor surgery was required for a wound in the 26-year-old's foot, and the Reds are yet to learn whether their deep-lying playmaker will be available to face Stoke City this weekend.
"Unfortunately Xabi has had seven stitches in his instep," said assistant boss Sammy Lee on the club's official website.
"We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore tonight.
"Hopefully there will be no damage but we won't know for the next 24 or 48 hours."
