The Croatian Football Federation have been punished for the racist chants aimed at England striker Emile Heskey during the nation's 1-4 home loss against the Three Lions.

England's demolition of Croatia in their World Cup qualifier on the 10th of September was afterwards marred as it became apparent that powerful Wigan Athletic forward Emile Heskey had been the target of racial abuse.

When Heskey was booked for a foul on Niko Kovac some supporters in Croatia's Maksimir Stadium made monkey noises.

Fifa have investigated the incident and have fined the Croatian Football Federation £15,000 after the English FA lodged an official complaint with the international governing body.

BBC quote Heskey as saying: "[The fans are] ignorant people. You have to let the people above deal with that and I will carry on playing my game."

Fifa stated: "There is no place for racism in football," and added: "Fifa is determined to continue broadcasting this message around the globe and deploying all of the means at its disposal to eliminate this form of discrimination."

The FA continued: "We repeat our position that we will not accept any racial abuse of any England players. There can be no place for racist behaviour in football."

The Croatia chants were unfortunately not an isolated incident. Chelsea left back Ashley Cole was subjected to monkey noises while playing an international game in Spain and the former Gunner was reported to be shaking and trembling as he left the pitch.
