The former U.S. national team coach's Pharaohs topped Zimbabwe 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier, improving to 3-0-0 and fortifying their place atop their African confederation qualifying group.
Mohamed Aboutrika's 88th-minute penalty kick snapped a 1-1 deadlock, after Zimbabwe's Knowledge Musona drew the teams level in the 75th minute. Egypt's Hosny Abd Rabo had opened the scoring 10 minutes earlier.
With nine points, Egypt is five points clear of Guinea, seven ahead of Mozambique and has eight more then Zimbabwe with three games remaining in the group stage.
The winners of each of the 10 four-team World Cup qualifying groups advances to the next round of African qualifying, in which the teams are paired for two-leg ties. The five winners of those matchups advance to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
