Iran Appoint Mayeli Kohan As Head Coach
Veteran coach Mayeli Kohan has been appointed to lead Iran for the remaining three matches in qualification for the 2010 World Cup.
Nine days following
the dismissal of Ali Daei as Iran’s head coach, Iran’s Football
Federation has announced Mohammad Mayeli Kohan as the new coach.
Iran’s Football Federation President, Kafashian stated: “After reviewing all candidates’ qualifications, we have chosen Mayeli Kohan as the new head coach.”
A former Perspolis football club and national team player, Mayeli Kohn has lots of experience as a head coach.
He even led the national team from 1995-97 and his record since then has been mixed. He is currently coach of league team Saipa.
When Daei was fired, names of several coaches including Ghotbi, former South Korea assistant and head coach of last year’s Iran champion, Perspolis, and Amir Ghalenoi, Iran’s head coach at the 2007 Asian Cup and currently in charge of league leaders Esteghlal, were among the names mentioned.
Last weekend Mayeli Kohan insisted that: “I would take the national team position if offered a two years deal and not a three match contract.”
Iran has three more matches in the 2010 World Cup Qualifying campaign.
With the loss to Saudi Arabia on March 28th, Iran has six points from five matches in her quest for reaching the 2010 world cup and at least needs seven points from the remaining three games against North Korea, UAE and South Korea to qualify.
