AEK Release Arruabarrena
AEK Athens have confirmed the release of Argentina international and former Villarreal left-back Martin Rodolfo Arruabarrena from the club...
The 33-year-old enjoyed a promising start to his AEK career before his debut season with the club was hampered by injury, never allowing the defender to find the same form which helped him make over 200 appearances for El Submarino Amarillo.
An official statement on www.aekfc.gr reads: “AEK would like to announce the end of its co-operation with Martin Arruabarrena. The club’s management would like to wish the player the best of luck for the remainder of his career.”
Arruabarrena was a conspicuous absentee from AEK’s pre-season preparations, constantly left out of the squad by new manager Giorgos Donis.
The fate of the former Boca Juniors defender was perhaps sealed by the arrival of Spanish left-back Juanfran from La Liga relegation victims Real Zaragoza during the summer.
AEK play host to Cypriot outfit AC Omonia in the first leg of their UEFA Cup Second Qualifying Round match on Thursday at the OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium.
