Thierry Henry has spoken often of his love for the city of New York. Goal.com readers have taken that a step further and 47% of those polled suggested that Henry will be living there by next March. Red Bull New York currently has an vacant designated player spot which Claudio Reyna vacated upon retirement last year, and could use an attacking partner for Juan Pablo Angel. However, prying the Frenchman away from Barcelona will be another matter. Henry recently scored a hattrick as Barca dismantled Valencia 4-0, and seems to be gelling into the squad well.
Next in line is someone who will definitely be flying crisscross across heartland America next season. Freddy Ljungberg earned 18% of the vote. The cultivated attacking Swede will be Seattle Sounders FC’s designated player, where he will team up with American legendary goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who gained 8% of the vote.
Third choice for Goal.com readers was Bayern Munich star Ze Roberto. The Brazilian has been linked with a move away from Germany in the offseason, and has spoken fondly of a possible MLS stint later in his career. Whether ‘later’ means 2009 remains to be seen, as he is still a crucial component of Bayern’s Bundesliga and Champions’ League pushes.
A surprisingly few 9% thought that the re-signing of MLS and MLS Cup MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto would be the biggest signing of the off-season. The Argentine will be back in Columbus another year, piecing together attacks and floating free kicks majestically into the net. Perhaps it is a case of not knowing what you have until it is gone for Goal.com readers.
Rounding out the list at 7% is an unknown Argentine. MLS frequently dips into Latin and South America, with Argentina a popular destination. Can another Schelotto be found?
