The 29-year-old is almost certain to leave the Tuscan club before the end of the transfer window, and his farewell appearance will be the second leg of the Champions League third qualifying round against Slavia Prague, which the Viola lead 2-0 after last night’s first leg.

Dainelli has been linked to various clubs all summer, and for a long time Genoa had been the favourites to snap him up.

The transfer was never completed, and almost definitely will not happen now following the Rossoblu’s purchase of Matteo Ferrari.

Instead it is Genoa’s city rivals Sampdoria who, according to reports in Italy, are fighting it out for Dainelli’s signature, along with Lazio.

Both sides want an experienced figure in defence, with the Biancocelesti particularly in need, as they are set to offload Guglielmo Stendardo.

Dainelli is a seasoned stopper, and has won one cap for Italy. He has been at Fiorentina since 2004 when he joined from Brescia.
