Javier Aguirre enjoyed his side's 5-2 win at Sporting Gijon as much as everyone else, but the Mexican coach concedes that there is still room for improvement.
Speaking at the post match press conference, Aguirre described the match as "open, fast, attacking, and enjoyable for the spectators."
Sporting Gijon have been a welcome addition to La Liga, and Aguirre was suitably impressed, saying "Sporting are a credit to the league and the fans should be proud of their team, even though they are probably disappointed at the moment,"
While Atleti's five goal haul will grab all the headlines, Aguirre realizes that there is still work to be done. "We have to improve many things in defense, especially against set pieces," said the coach.
The last few weeks have seen many missed opportunities for Los Rojiblancos, and the significance of this victory in this regard was not lost on the coach. "We let points slip against Numancia and Osasuna, and we could not do that again today," said Aguirre."
This round saw many of Atletico's rivals come up against each other, and Aguirre understood that these three points were almost worth double in that context, stating "We knew that first was playing third and fourth was playing fifth, but we did not expect the second placed team to also drop points."
Finally, the coach touched on the controversial upcoming trip to Marseille, saying "If it were up to us, we would not have traveled on the day. We are going to a civilized country, not a war torn one, just to play a football match. It is important to keep winning so that Atletico can play among the best in Europe every year, not just once every ten seasons."
After their trip to Marseille, Atleti entertain Real Betis in the next round of La Liga.
