Aguirre: Not As Easy As It Looked

Atlético Madrid steamrolled their way to another 4-0 La Liga home win after demolishing poor Recreativo Huelva but coach, Javier Aguirre assured that it wasn’t as easy as the scoreline suggested.

Los Colchoneros returned from their midweek Champions League exploits and did not miss a beat against Recreativo in Round Three of La Liga as they put four past the Andalucians thanks to a Florent Sinama-Pongolle double and one each from Sergio Agüero and Maniche.

But the rojiblancos coach, Aguirre, played down the team’s all-domineering display. If anything, he in fact chose to highlight the flaws rather than over-praising their superiority.

“It was not as easy as the scoreline showed, that is certain,” he started off in the post-match conference.

“We left a lot of gaps in midfield and there’s too much distance between defence and attack, like both our first goals, for instance, which came from long balls.

“But I liked the way we dealt with the ball and the way we tidied up. There was good balance in the team and if we can continue to do that and restrict our mistakes, then we will see a lot of potential,” he added.

And even before the reporters could ask Aguirre if he considers his side a real title contender, the Mexican stressed: “In Matchday three of the league, we are not candidates for anything.

“When it comes to round 30, then we’ll start to know our true position in the league.”

Finally, the coach once again praised his one-time adversary, Maniche for yet another solid performance.

“He played a good game and he is performing at a very high level. He feels comfortable in the team and in the dressing room, he’s very competitive and he feels important,” Aguirre concluded.
