The defending Supporters' Shield winners took a big step toward replenishing their center back corps with the signing of the Ghana international.
The New York Red Bulls have announced the signing of Ghanaian center back Gideon Baah from Finnish side Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (HJK Helsinki). Per league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Baah, 24, has played in the Finnish league since 2013, first with FC Honka and then with HJK. The center back has made six appearances in each the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with HJK, where he has played since 2014.
“Gideon has all the characteristics we were looking for in a central defender,” said sporting director Ali Curtis in a club release. “He fits our style of play extremely well and we are anxious to have him get started with our club.”
Baah made his senior international debut for Ghana in October 2015, taking part in a friendly against Canada at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The Ghana international will help fill a void at center back for the Red Bulls. Matt Miazga was sold to Chelsea last month, while last year's other starter, Damien Perrinelle, is recovering from injury and isn't expected back until April or May.
