Mexican Carlos Vela is close to returning to former club Arsenal, according to a report in Spanish publication Voz Populi.
The article states that the Premier League club has activated a buyout clause of 4 million euros it holds and that there is little Vela’s current club Real Sociedad can do to stop it.
If the deal is finalized, the decision about whether the 25-year-old would stay in North London or be sold on would be taken by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and the player, who has previously talked openly about his problems adapting to life in London.
Vela has resurrected his career at Real Sociedad over the last three seasons, becoming one of the best attacking players in La Liga, with 41 goals in 104 appearances.
The Cancun native left for Arsenal from Chivas after impressing for Mexico in the 2005 Under-17 World Cup in Peru.
Vela has refused to play for Mexico since 2011 and ruled himself out of this summer's World Cup because of “personal reasons.”
