“We know what the value of the player is and how far we were prepared to go,” the Liverpool boss told reporters. “We won’t over pay.”
Rodgers insists Liverpool should “do all they can” in the transfer market in order to bolster the club’s chances of securing a top-four spot this season and warns his side may struggle to keep pace if injuries continue to mount.
“Of course, I wanted to strengthen the team and if we are unable to do that it would be disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do about it,” said the 41-year-old. “I think, yes, absolutely, we are so close to our aim of the Champions League and we should do everything we can to get there – and the owners feel like that as well.
“The people in the club see where we are at. I’ve always felt with this team that we would need to have everyone available to keep us in it, but if they are not we’ll still have to find ways to win games.”
