Benedetto impressed in this season’s edition of the Copa Libertadores, scoring goals against Atletico Mineiro and Sao Paulo. He won the Clausura 2012 championship with his former club, which he rejoined in 2011 after spells in Argentina’s second division with Defensa y Justicia and Gimnasia.
“Duvier (Riascos) left, and we brought in Herculez Gomez and now we’re bringing a forward called Dario Benedetto,” club president Jorge Alberto Hank confirmed to the press in Mexico City on Monday.
The president added that the club had been following Benedetto for some time and that he can play as a No. 9 or out on the wing. The new recruit will arrive in Tijuana in the coming days and will boost competition for places in the forward positions, with Alfredo Moreno also having left to join Puebla in the offseason.
Xolos start their Liga MX Apertura season in the Estadio Caliente against Atlas on July 19 and will also be involved in the CONCACAF Champions League.
