Montpellier confirms Yanga-Mbiwa exit ahead of Newcastle move

The French champion has confirmed that the team's captain has played his last game for the club and will soon ply his trade in the Premier League for the Magpies.
Montpellier has confirmed Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has left the club ahead of his transfer to Newcastle United.

The current Ligue 1 champion has revealed on its official website that the 23-year-old has traveled to England and is currently undergoing a medical ahead of his move to Alan Pardew's side.

Newcastle has yet to confirm the transfer but all signs indicate that the France international will soon be playing at St James' Park.

Yanga-Mbiwa, who has three caps for his country, had been linked with Arsenal and AC Milan in the 2012 summer transfer window after impressing at the heart of his side's defense in its surprise title victory last season.

However, after selling off star striker Olivier Giroud to the Gunners, Montpellier managed to hold onto its skipper until January. He featured during his side's Champions League campaign, which saw the club finish bottom of a group containing Arsenal, Schalke 04 and Olympiakos.

Despite rumors of late interest in the versatile defender, who can also play in midfield, from Arsenal, it appears that Newcastle has won the race for him.
