Toronto FC signs former Sporting KC midfielder Julio Cesar

The 34-year-old Brazilian provides MLS experience and flexibility to a TFC side looking to improve all over the pitch.
Toronto FC's busy offseason got a little Brazilian flavour on Tuesday, when the club announced that it had signed former Sporting Kansas City defender/midfielder Julio Cesar.

The 34-year-old is a two-year veteran of Major League Soccer, having spent the 2011 and 2012 season with Kansas City. He made 54 league appearances in that time, during which he made a reputation for himself as a hard-working player with a bit of a tough streak.

“It’s important that Toronto FC becomes a more difficult team to play against this year," team president and general manager Kevin Payne said in a statement. "Julio Cesar will be an important part of the backbone of our team in the middle of the field.

“He’s a tough, experienced, committed player who was a big part of Sporting Kansas City’s success over the past two years, and we’re very pleased he will be a part of TFC this season.”

Cesar, from São Luis, Brazil, has also featured for teams in Central America and Europe. Notable clubs that he has been part of during his 17-year career include Real Madrid, Benfica, Bolton Wandrers, and Olimpiacos.
