Fiorentina closes in on Manchester United outcast Berbatov

The former Bulgaria international has slipped further down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the arrival of Robin van Persie and looks to be headed to Serie A

Dimitar Berbatov is on the verge of joining Fiorentina from Manchester United after flying out to Italy on Wednesday, can confirm.

The striker is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Serie A club ahead of a move reportedly worth 5 million euros, which will be paid in three installments.

The Bulgarian will undergo a medical before signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year to end a summer of speculation over his future.

Berbatov was desperate to leave United after falling out of favour at Old Trafford and finding himself down the pecking order behind Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.

The 31-year-old, who was top scorer in the Premier League two seasons ago, cost United a club record 37.75m euros when he joined from Tottenham in 2008 but leaves for a fraction of that fee with just a year remaining on his contract.

West Ham, Zenit St Petersburg and Dynamo Kiev were among the clubs to express an interest in the former Bayer Leverkusen man, who made just 12 Premier League appearances last season, scoring seven goals.
