thumbnail Hello,

The World Cup and European Championship veteran, who spent seven seasons with Aston Villa, could join the Canadian team.

Former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg could be set to join Major League Soccer club Toronto FC, Goal.com has learned. The 34-year-old, who has represented Sweden 117 times, including two FIFA World Cups and four UEFA European Championships, could join the Canadian team as soon as next week if a deal is finalized.

Toronto cleared salary cap room by dealing Designated Player Julian de Guzman to FC Dallas earlier this week, and it appears they plan to bolster the second-poorest defense in Major League Soccer with the vastly experienced Swede, who is currently out of contract.

Mellberg, who made his name with Aston Villa in England, began his career in his native Sweden before also enjoying spells with Racing Santander, Juventus, and most recently, Olympiacos, where he helped the Greek club retain its Superleague Greece crown.
