Philadelphia Union sign Costa Rican left back Porfirio Lopez

The 26-year-old arrives in Philadelphia fresh off of back-to-back titles with Alajuelense in the 2011 Summer and Winter Championships.

The Philadelphia Union have announced the acquisition of left back Porfirio Lopez from Chinese club Dalian Haichang.  Lopez spent last season on loan with Alajuelense in Costa Rica.

As per league policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed and Lopez will eligible for the club once he receives his  P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

The 26-year-old defender arrives in Philadelphia off back-to-back titles with Alajuelense in the 2011 Summer and Winter Championships in Costa Rica. Playing primarily as a left back, Lopez has appeared in a total of 16 games this season. His first and lone goal in the Costa Rican top flight came in the 62nd minute of the team’s 4-0 victory over Cartagines on Sept. 7, 2011.

Lopez started his career with Santos de Guapiles in 2005, playing in a total of 42 matches before moving to Puntarenas in 2009.  He played in 31 games with the club, finding the back of the net in one occasion.  In 2010, the defender moved to China’s First Division side Dalian Haichang, notching two tallies in ten matches before returning to Costa Rica.
