Montreal made trades to go along with its expansion draft selections, while a host of teams waived playersChivas USA deals Braun, Mayen to Montreal for Riley
After selecting defender James Riley from Seattle in the expansion draft, Montreal turned around and shipped him to Chivas USA in exchange for forward Justin Braun and midfielder Gerson Mayen.
Braun, 24, signed with the Goats in 2008 and appeared in a total of 96 matches, 72 as a starter and scored 24 goals. He has been called into U.S. national team camp, but has yet to be capped.
Mayen, 22, signed with Chivas USA in March 2008 and played in 12 matches in 2009 and four games in 2010. He was loaned to Ft. Lauderdale Strikers of the NASL this season.
In exchange, the Goats acquire Riley, a 29-year-old defender who has spent the last three of his seven MLS seasons with the Seattle Sounders. He has appeared in 178 matches in his career, including 160 starts, while playing for New England, San Jose and Seattle.
Impact acquire Wahl from Seattle
Seattle Sounders FC traded defender Tyson Wahl to the Montreal Impact in exchange for allocation money on Wednesday.
Wahl, 27, started a career-high 22 games in his sixth MLS season. He was selected from Kansas City in the 2008 Expansion Draft and became the club's starting left back for much of his third season with Sounders FC.
"Tyson has been solid contributor, earning more minutes with each season," said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid. "We'll miss his value to our team, but this trade enables him to be a full-time starter and the allocation money will help us maintain the high quality in our team."
Several clubs waive players
Ten clubs waived a total of 31 players on Wednesday, all of whom were made available in the league's Waiver Draft. Of the players jettisoned, only one was claimed: Vancouver midfielder Nizar Khalfan, who was claimed by the Philadelphia Union.
Among the notables waived was Sporting Kansas City midfielder Jeferson, who was acquired as a Designated Player in July on loan from Vasco de Gama in Brazil. The 27-year-old midfielder made nine regular season appearances and notched one assist during his time with SKC.
Also waived was Red Bulls forward John Rooney, brother of Wayne, who was selected in last year's SuperDraft. Full list of waived players below:
