Official: Fernando Morientes Leaves Olympique Marseille
The Spanish striker has been released by Marseille.
By Stefan Coerts
Reigning French champions Olympique Marseille have announced that Fernando Morientes has left the club with immediate effect as the last year of the striker's contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Morientes joined Marseille from Valencia in the summer of 2009, but the veteran forward failed to live up to expectations at the French giants. The 34-year-old made only twelve league appearances for L'OM in the 2009-10 campaign, scoring one goal.
The experienced striker has worn the shirts of Albacete, Real Zaragoza, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Monaco, Valencia and Olympique Marseille during his lengthy career. Additionally, Morientes represented Spain at senior level 47 times, scoring 27 goals.
Morientes rose to prominence during his spell at Madrid and won three Champions League trophies with the Blancos.
The attacker could now be on his way to Mexico after his agent revealed that Club America are keen to sign the prolific hitman.
