Mexico's Atlante Target U.S. International Jonathan Bornstein

Atlante are hoping to acquire Jonathan Bornstein as part of a player swap that would send Giancarlo Maldonado to Major League Soccer.

Atlante have set their sights on U.S. international Jonathan Bornstein as the Mexican league club are hoping to land the player in what would be a unique player swap.

According to reports, Chivas USA would receive forward Giancarlo Maldonado while Bornstein would head to Cancun to play for Atlante.

Atlante President Jose Antonio Garcia told Mexico daily Reforma that a deal is almost in place.

"It's a possibility. Nothing is certain yet," Garcia said. "We have the deal resolved with Chivas USA but we're waiting to hear from the player. He is with the national team in South Africa and everything is being handled with the agent. We'll have to wait a little."

Bornstein has spent his entire career with Chivas USA. The 2006 MLS Rookie of the Year burst onto the scene with the United States national team after former club coach Bob Bradley took over in December '06. Bornstein was a part of the 2007 Gold Cup and Copa America squads, and was also a key member of World Cup qualifying teams and made the 2010 World Cup squad.

Attacking was his forte in college as Bradley moved Bornstein from forward to left back in 2006, but Bornstein took to the position well enough to earn a spot on the World Cup roster as a defender.

Meanwhile, Chivas USA would receive a player in Maldonado who has had success scoring goals in Mexico. Maldonado, 27, burst onto the scene in 2007, scoring 18 goals while helping Atlante win the Apertura 2007 title. His goal production has dropped off steadily since as he has scored just 14 goals in five seasons since, including just one tally in the Bicentenario 2010 season.

Still, the Venezuelan would fill a hole as Chivas USA's attack has been meager for some time, and the club would apparently be willing to sacrifice a bit of defending and a versatile player in trying to generate more of an attack up front.

Atlante's Garcia said one of Bornstein's better traits is his background - his mother is Mexican.

"He is a good player and would not take up a foreigner spot," Garcia said. "We just have to wait to see how everything develops."
