Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov's confidence has slumped so low that his career at Old Trafford is hanging in the balance, according to the News of the World.
The 28-year-old hitman has been subject to the critics' scanner on several occasions since joining the Red Devils in 2008, as he has had trouble meeting the expectations that come with a £30 million price tag.
And Sir Alex Ferguson - who has for so long backed the Bulgaria international to succeed - is now said to be considering whether the striker needs to be offloaded during the summer.
A source close to the Scot allegedly said: "Berbatov is a real puzzle and a problem. He's so lacking in confidence that it's almost as if he's scared to go out and express himself.
"On the big occasions, somebody like Wayne Rooney grows in stature, but Berbatov hides away. He just seems to shrink.
"He should have everything it takes to succeed and 'Fergie' certainly believed in him, but it's just not working out."
It is consequently speculated that Ferguson could sell Berbatov to raise funds for a bid on Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
The Frenchman joined Los Blancos in a big-money move during the summer, but has not featured at the Bernabeu as frequently as he would have liked.
