Onyewu On Verge Of England Move
U.S. International defender Oguchi Onyewu is apparently set on a move to the Premier League, according to reports.
Playing the last five years with Standard Liege of the Belgian Jupiler league, U.S. Men’s National Team defender Oguchi Onyewu has created quite a reputation for himself.
The 26-year-old is at the end of his contract and apparently is in demand. A whole host of clubs, from numerous countries are vying for his signature, but it appears Onyewu is set on a move to England.
"I have already played in England (in 2007, at Newcastle) and I want to return there," Onyewu told Belgian newspaper Het Niuewsblad. "I have received an offer from Birmingham, but there are other clubs that would like me. At the end of the week, I will know my choice."
Also in the running is Birmingham’s rival club, Wolves, who have shown interest in the player recently. Clint Dempsey’s Fulham are also looking to strengthen their defense and could turn to Onyewu.
Since joining Liege in 2004, Onyewu has made 174 appearances for the Belgian club, scoring 13 goals in the process. Onyewu has also been a stalwart in the U.S. lineup since 2004, having made 42 appearances scoring five goals.
