Europa League Roundup: Bocanegra, Edu and Rangers lose to Maribor in stoppage time

The Scottish champion suffers a shock defeat away, whilst Celtic and Birmingham are held to goalless draws in their respective matches.

NK Maribor 2-1 Rangers

Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu were both in the starting lineup as Rangers conceded an injury-time winner in Slovenia in the first leg of its Europa League playoff game. But the Gers will take an important away goal back to Ibrox after Juanma Ortiz's first half strike against Slovenian side NK Maribor.

The Spaniard struck to give the visitors the advantage but the Glasgow side was pegged back in the second half when Agim Ibraimi leveled proceedings seven minutes after the interval. Substitute Etien Velikonja, who had only been on the pitch 10 minutes, scored the winner deep into injury-time.

The away goal should give McCoist's men a good chance in the second leg but it is all to play for at Ibrox next week.

Nacional 0-0 Birmingham

Jonathan Spector went 90 minutes for Birmingham as Chris Hughton's first attempt at European football ended in a goalless draw. Both sides cancelled each other out on the small Portuguese island of Madeira. Birmingham had most of the possession and almost took the lead just after the break when Chris Wood smashed his header back onto the post.

Neither side created any other clear cut chances and a draw was a fair result in the end.

Celtic 0-0 FC Sion

Celtic was unfortunate not to take an advantage to Sion next week as the club couldn't make anything of its 14 attempts on goal. Georgios Samaras was guilty of missing a few half decent chances but he also found the opposing defense to be quite resilient.

Fraser Forster marked his return to the squad after signing on loan from Newcastle United with a crucial stop seven minutes from time which could be a pivotal point over the two legs. Manager Neil Lennon brought on Patrick McCourt for Samaras in the closing stages but that proved too little to late.

Hannover 96 2-1 Sevilla

Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will take a slender advantage to Spain as they labored to victory. Jan Schlaudraff opened the scoring in the sixth minute but the Bundesliga side was pegged back in the 37th minute courtesy of Frederic Kanoute's strike.

However Hannover 96 edged in front again on the stroke of halftime as Schlaudraff grabbed his second of the night to leave Sevilla trailing ahead of the return tie back in Andalusia.

Slovan Bratislava 1-0 Roma

Roma has it all to do at home in the second leg as it slumped to a narrow defeat in Slovakia. A goal in the 80th minute from Marian Had pulled off a shock win for the hosts as Luis Enrique's men failed to break down a staunch defensive display from Slovan Bratislava.

Differdange 0-4 Paris Saint-Germain

PSG recorded a flattering victory in Luxembourg as the club was made to work harder for the win than a 4-0 scoreline shows. An early strike from Kevin Gameiro gave the Ligue 1 side the lead but it took until the 71st before Jean-Christophe Bahebeck could double his team's advantage.

Late goals from Jeremy Menez and Ceara put gloss on the scoreline as the French side will look to complete the job in the return leg.

Lazio 6-0 Rabotnicki Skopje

Lazio virtually booked its place into the group stages as the club annihilated its Macedonian opponent. Hernanes broke the deadlock midway through the first half before Stefano Mauri added a second goal, opening the floodgates. Further strikes from Djibril Cisse, who earned himself a brace, Tommaso Rocchi and Miroslav Klose sealed the romp.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Vitoria

Elias struck twice to decide this first leg tie as late goals from the Spaniards put them firmly in the driving seat to advance to the group stage. Joao Paulo's sending off for the Portuguese side made the task even harder.

HJK 2-0 Schalke

Jermaine Jones was not involved as HJK took a shock 2-0 win over his Schalke side. Teemu Pukki got both goals, one on either side of halftime, to put the German side ont he back foot heading into the second leg.

Bursaspor 1-2 Anderlecht

Sacha Kljestan went 90 minutes as Anderlecht came from a goal down to take a 2-1 win over Bursaspor, setting the team up in a great position heading into the second leg.

Bursaspor opened the scoring in the 36th through a Gökçek Vederson penalty, but Jonathan Legear pulled it back with a penalty of his own in the 53rd. Milan Jovanović grabbed the winner for Anderlecht in the 77th.

Nordsjælland 0-0 Sporting CP

Michael Parkhurst started and Oguchi Onyewu was an unused sub as the two defenders had their clubs face off on Thursday. Neither side could find the net and the 0-0 results leaves plenty on the table heading into the second leg.

Aalesund 2-1 AZ

AZ fell 2-1 to Aalesund, with Michael Barrantes scoring both for the home side in the win. The first came from the penalty spot just 14 minutes in, but Maarten Martens pulled AZ level in the 30th.
Barrantes netted his second of the match in the 73rd to give the lead back to Aalesund.

Jozy Altidore entered for the final 15 minutes, but couldn't help his side pull level.
