EVERTON

Carlo Nash - 6 - Came off his line with confidence, and handled pretty well when called upon. Helpless with Yurevich's deflected winner.

Seamus Coleman - 6.5 - Built on his fine showing against Spurs recently with a solid performance, times his tackling well and uses the ball smartly.

Tony Hibbert - 6.5 - Captained the side, and produced a display of maturity in a rookie defense. His lack of pace was exposed on a couple of occasions but he was solid enough.

Shane Duffy7 - Tall and commanding in the air, and got himself into the right place to deal with most balls that came into the Everton box, clearing one effort off the line. Arguably the standout performer for the Blues, though he may be slightly disappointed by the way in which Yurevich's strike deflected home off him.

Jake Bidwell - 6 - Dived in with the naivety of youth early on, and had a few nervy moments, but kept going well and improved as the game wore on.

Leon Osman6 - Working his way back to fitness, Osman flitted around the periphery of the game. Showed glimpses of his quality but never enough to influence the game.

Jack Rodwell n/a - Lasted just seven minutes before being forced off with what looked like a hamstring strain.

Adam Forshaw5.5 - Encouraged throughout by David Moyes, but saw little of the ball and looked a little lost wide on the right of midfield

Jose Baxter - 6.5 - Full of confidence, and saw plenty of the ball. Set-piece delivery was mixed, and his willingness to go to ground was disappointing. Had Everton's best efforts with an audacious curled lob and a free kick.

Kieran Agard - 6 - His pace was under-used by Everton. Went as close as anyone in the first half, and almost grabbed an equalizer late on.

Yakubu5 - Needed more support, but looked a little off the pace nonetheless and posed little threat. Missed a late chance to add a second, skewing a left-foot strike horribly wide.

Substitutes

Hope Akpan - 5 - Given his debut earlier than expected after Rodwell's injury, he looked physical and athletic, though conceded possession too easily at times and looked very clumsy.

Shkodran Mustafi - 6 - Replaced Hibbert after BATE's goal

Nathan Craig - N/A - Late arrival, and yet another debutant.

BATE BORISOV

Sergei Veremko - 6 - Not much to do for the BATE keeper at all, not ideal on such a cold evening.

Aleksandr Yurevich - 8 - Was eager to get forward and support his wide midfielder, and kept the ball on the ground well. Got his reward with a fierce left-footed strike that deflected past Nash off Duffy for the game's only goal.

Sergei Sosnovski - 6.5 - Unlucky not to give his side the lead with a towering header early on, and shackled Yakubu pretty comfortably.

Igor Shitov - 6.5 - Blazed a chance over in the first half, but coped with Agard's pace and Yakubu's strength easily.

Maksim Bordachov - 6.5 - Stepped forward from left-back with confidence at times, and passed the ball well.

Aleksandr Volodko - 7 - Stung Nash's palms with a fierce first-half strike, and his influence grew as he joined in with BATE's attacking moves

Dmitri Likhtarovich - 6.5 - Kept the ball moving in midfield with his sharp passing, and covered well in midfield before being replaced by Pavlov.

Pavel Nekhaychik - 5.5- Booked in the first half for dragging down Coleman, and was sloppy in possession too often. Had an effort cleared off the line by Duffy in the second half.

Sergei Krivets - 8 - Looked classy in possession and delivered plenty of quality from the right. Was easily BATE's best player, lurking dangerously in the space between midfield and attack and using the ball to good effect.

Maksim Skavysh - 6 - Might have had a penalty in the first half, and linked well with Krivets at times.

Vitali Rodionov - 5.5 - Wasteful in possession too often, but showed some neat touches and drew a lot of fouls with his quick feet.

Substitutes

Vitali Bulgya - n/a - Late replacement for Nekhaychik

Alexander Pavlov - 6.5 - Replaced the skipper Likhtarovich, and offered a pacier alternative. Got forward well to support the attack.

Oganes Goaryan - 6 - On late for Skavysh, but had little impact, except for a couple of so-so deliveries from set-pieces.
