AaB Destroy Deportivo La Coruna
Even with home advantage, the Spanish side were thrashed by Aab and their UEFA Cup campaign is at an end.
Deportivo La Coruna (1) 1-3 (6) AaB
AaB scored three times in five minutes to send Deportivo La Coruna crashing out of the UEFA Cup this evening, as they beat them 6-1 on aggregate.
In a disciplined and controlled display, the Danish side proved that their victory a week ago was not just due to home advantage and are certainly worth winners of the tie.
The home side looked the more dominant in the first-half and went ahead when Zaza could only palm Sergio's shot into the far corner.
However, with the break looming, the Danish side scored three times, first through Luton Shelton, then Kjetil Waehler and then Tomas Enevoldsen.
The goals all but ended the match and the second period featured very few chances to either side.
Depor started the game with plenty of injuries worries to contend with and things got worse just a few minutes in when Rodolfo Bodipo had to go off to be replaced by Omar Bravo. With the scoreline weighing heavily in the visitors favour it was inevitable that they would try and play conservatively, and so it proved from the off.
However, they should have gone behind after ten minutes when Bravo tapped home from a Juan Valeron ball, only for it to be adjudged wrongly offside. Nevertheless, Depor kept on pushing and pressing AaB and Angel Lafita, Bravo and Filipe all went close as they hounded the Danish side.
The only complaint would be that they were a bit impatient at times and rushed some of the passing and shots. Indeed, it looked as though they would be going in three behind at the break until Sergio turned inside one player from 30 yards and then struck a shot that Zaza could only parry onto the post and in.
The goal gave Depor hope but within the last five minutes of the half the tie was put all but beyond them as AaB scored three times. The first goal, scored by Shelton, had a huge amount of controversy to it as the striker appeared to be offside as he headed home a flick-on from a free-kick.
The linesman did not raise his flag though and minutes later AaB had a second when a corner was flicked on at the near post and Waehler headed it home. As if that wasn't bad enough Depor were hit on the counter with just a minute left in the half to make it 6-1 on aggregate. The move broke down the right and Due struck a shot at Aranzubia that bounced into the middle of the box, where Enevoldsen volleyed home into an empty net.
It was a devastating few minutes for Depor and the second-half reflected the scoreline as neither side created many chances at all. AaB seemed more than content to play the ball around and wait for the Spanish team to come onto them, but they couldn't break the Danes down.
The closest they came to creating a chance was when Bravo went down in the box under a challenge, but the referee waved away the appeals. As the clock wore down, Depor continued to press but AaB looked strong in defence and didn't give Miguel Angel Lotina's team a sniff of goal. To make matter worse for the home team Pablo Alvarez was sent off for a rash tackle that earned him his second yellow card, in injury time.
