Maracana stadium could be closed after World Cup

Brazil's showpiece stadium in Rio de Janeiro may not meet the requirements to be included among the country’s venues for its bid to host the Olympics.

The famous Marcana stadium may be forced to close its doors following the World Cup in Brazil next year.

In a report from the International Olympic Committee, Brazil’s most famous ground did not meet certain requirements to be eligible to be one of the venues for the Olympic games in 2016, which the nation is bidding to host.

The report showed that the stadium, which costs around R$1 billion, was short of 39 points needed to meet approval. Among the parameters not met was the roof, which currently only withstands 81 tons, almost 40 tons short of the required weight limit.

The report also reveals that the construction of parking and shopping centers "were not considered in the project submitted to the IOC by 2016."

The iconic stadium, which was opened for the 1950 World Cup finals, has been closed for refurbishment since last year ahead of the up-coming Confederations Cup tournament to be held in the country this summer.
