USA Stars React To World Cup Draw On Twitter
Several USA internationals posted their thoughts on the World Cup draw on Twitter.
The draw for the group stages of the 2010 World Cup provided a flurry of excitement for fans, but perhaps even more for players desperate to make an impact on the global stage.
Several members within a shout of making the United States roster come June posted messages on Twitter relaying their thoughts.
For some, fully fleshed out groups cemented their desire to participate in South Africa.
“I'm gonna say something right now,” tweeted Freddy Adu, who has fallen off the USA radar of late. “I have never wanted to be a part of something as bad as I wanna be in this world cup.”
Adu has struggled to lock down playing time at the club level in both Portugal and France. Another who hasn't played much of late is Maurice Edu. The Rangers midfielder is back in training after a long injury layover and hoping to force his way back into coach Bob Bradley's plans.
“Talking to my boy @CharlieDavies9 right now...we both got 2 goals in mind after watching the draw: get fit, get to South Africa!!! USA 2010!!” he said of Charlie Davies, the U.S. striker who was involved in a tragic car accident which broke several of his bones and which may cause him to miss the World Cup entirely.
Since the accident, Davies, a frequent tweeter previously, has only tweeted once.
“I would like to thank everyone for all their prayers and best wishes,” he said.“I'm on the road to recovery!”
If the Sochaux striker recovers in time, he could join his USA teammates in Group C against England, Algeria, and Slovenia. A relatively weak group, the draw has filled most pundits with optimism that the USA will advance.
“The group is tough but it could have been worse,” admitted Jozy Altidore.
The actual draw didn't matter to Heath Pearce, who just wants the nation to prove itself.
“Great draw for the USA....It's a chance to show we've improved and developed as a soccer nation,” the FC Dallas fullback tweeted. “No more excuses about draws and opponents!”
Finding out future opponents wasn't the only lure of the draw. South African actress and model Charlize Theron co-presented the official draw.
“Ms Theron is beautiful,” Brian Ching pointed out.
