World Cup Qualifying: El Salvador vs. Honduras
The Hondurans need to rebound from a crushing defeat and get some help to secure a spot in South Africa.
The Honduran National Team had their chance to make the World Cup at home and blew it. Needing a win over U.S. and with the support of their home crowd Los Catrachos gave away a lead and missed a penalty on their way to a 3-2 loss. Now Honduras must get a win at Estadio Cuscatlan against a very dangerous El Salvadorian team that has yet to lose at home.
Two points back of Costa Rica in the standings Honduras will also need the U.S. to hold serve at home against the Ticos to reclaim their third place spot in the Hex.
El Salvador felt the wrath of Mexico at Azteca on Saturday night falling 4-1 and ending whatever slim hopes they had of pushing on for a spot in South Africa. Still, the Salvadorians have a part to play in deciding who will represent the region in South Africa next year.
Having already toppled Mexico and Costa Rica as well as earning a draw with the U.S. on their respective visits to San Salvador a win against Honduras would be the most telling result of the round, forcing the Hondurans into a playoff for their World Cup lives.
Players To Watch:
Honduras: Carlos Pavon. After missing two chances, including a penalty, in the dying minutes of the loss to the U.S. Pavon may be one of the most disliked people in all of Honduras. But should the veteran striker redeem himself with a couple of goals against El Salvador he could quickly become a national hero again.
El Salvador: Ramon Sanchez. The captain will have his work cut out for him against the powerful Honduran midfield, but has played well throughout most of the Hex.
Goal.com Prediction: It has become very hard to pick against El Salvador at home but this game holds much more meaning for Honduras. Look for Los Catrachos to make a statement in San Salvador with a win. El Salvador 1-3 Honduras.
