The United States' thrilling victory over Ghana in the team's World Cup opener was voted as the best moment in American sports this year.

The U.S. national team won the ESPY award for the best sports moment of the year after defeating Ghana in its opening match of the 2014 World Cup.

Clint Dempsey led his teammates to the stage to accept the award and gave a speech thanking the team's fans for their support in Brazil and back home.

“We just wanted to say it's an honor to win this award with all the other people and players who are in this category,” Dempsey said. “We appreciate the fans that voted for us, and also the fans who held us down when we were in Brazil for the World Cup.”

The Americans defeated Ghana after John Brooks headed home the winning goal in the 86th minute. Ghana had eliminated the U.S. from the previous two World Cups.

The Yanks finished second in the Group of Death — which featured Ghana, Portugal and Germany — before eventually losing to Belgium in the round of 16.

Also nominated for the award were Mariano Rivera's final game with the New York Yankees and Kevin Durant's NBA MVP speech.
